Residential Play Structures > Designing Your Play Area

Designing your play area is as easy as A-B-C:

Area
The portion of your backyard that you would
like to convert into a play area.

Budget
What you are planning to invest in the
playset (plus border and ground cushioning).

Children
How old are your children and what activities do they enjoy?

Safety Setbacks
A general recommendation for safety setbacks is to allow 6’ on all sides of the structure, (e.g., at the end of a slide or ladder). With swings we recommend at least 10’ clearance to allow for swing motion and safe passage around the swings.

The Kids' Backyard Store provides complimentary site visits to assist you in planning an area and designing a play structure that will meet your family's needs both now and for years to come.

Ground Cushioning
Ground cushioning is always recommended beneath and around play structures. Unfortunately grass does not usually provide sufficient protection from falls. The most popular cushioning materials are cedar chips, pea gravel, and cedar or fir shavings. We can refer you to local companies that supply these materials.

We've added a special showroom display featuring several examples of border and ground cushioning materials to help you choose the best combination for your backyard.
